Snack in Grand Baie: filled breads, sauter and the daily menu at Chez Boom

Chez Boom is a snack in Grand Baie: a counter, a wok, fresh bread filled to order and one plate of the day cooked that same morning. We are on the main road in Grand Baie, next to the football pitch — Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers 30522, the village that continues Grand Baie along the north coast. Open Monday to Friday, 7am to 2pm. Here is what you eat, when to come and what it costs.

Where to find us and when to come

The address is easy to remember: the main road in Grand Baie, next to the football pitch. We open at 7am and close at 2pm, Monday to Friday; Saturday and Sunday we are closed. Most people turn up around 11:30 and the pace does not drop again until early afternoon. We do not deliver: you pick your order up at the counter.

The morning, before the rush

Between 7am and 10am the snack is at its quietest. That is the hour of people who start work early: a vegetable roti at Rs 25, a warm filled bread, something solid before a long day on their feet. If you work around Grand Baie and want a mid-morning break, that is the moment when there is still time to talk. From 11:30 onwards, the wok never drops in temperature again until closing.

Filled breads: first the wok, then the bread

The backbone of the counter is the filled bread. A sauter — meat or seafood stir-fried in a wok over high heat with onions — slipped into a fresh bread roll split open and filled in front of you. Nothing sits in a warming tray: every order hits the pan the moment you place it. The sausage sauter is Rs 75, the chicken sauter Rs 90. If the word means nothing to you, we explain it in full in our article on the sauter.

The daily menu at Rs 250

At lunchtime there is also the full plate: the menu du jour at Rs 250. One pot, cooked that same morning, different every day depending on the market. A typical example at our counter: rice, red beans, chicken salmi, lettuce salad. When the pot is empty it is over — and that is almost always before 1pm. The tradition behind that plate is told in our article on the Mauritian canteen.

What it costs

The counter runs from Rs 25 for a vegetable roti to Rs 150 for the ourite safranée, fresh lagoon octopus with saffron. In between: the meat sauters, the fish salad, the squid, and the plate of the day at Rs 250. The full list, price by price, is in our guide to cheap eats in Pointe aux Canonniers, and it is also on the menu page.

A neighbourhood snack, not a restaurant

Chez Boom is nothing like a beachfront restaurant: it is a snack, in the Mauritian sense of the word — a small neighbourhood canteen where you order at the counter and where plenty of people leave with their bread to eat it on the way. The regulars are people who work in the area, families, and visitors staying nearby who want something other than a menu written for holidaymakers. The snack is run by the same family as the Team Boom muay thai club, which occupies the same address and trains in the evening.

Order before noon — it's ready when you arrive

The smart move fits in one line: a message by phone or WhatsApp on +230 5987 8153 before noon, and your order waits for you with your name on it. That goes double for the daily menu, which sells out fast. What comes out of the wok also ends up on TikTok, @chez_boom_snack. Monday to Friday, 7am to 2pm, on the main road in Grand Baie, next to the football pitch.
