In Grand Baie, finding a breakfast at 7am that is not a hotel buffet is not that easy. Chez Boom opens at that hour, Monday to Friday, on the main Grand Baie road in Pointe aux Canonniers, next to the football ground. On the menu: fresh bread filled from the wok, a vegetable roti, and the calm of a counter that has not yet seen its lunchtime queue.
What you eat in the morning
A Mauritian breakfast fits in one hand. The simplest is the vegetable roti at 25 Rs: a hot flatbread rolled around vegetables in sauce, the whole island's morning bread. More filling, the sausage sauter at 75 Rs — sausage stir-fried in the wok with onions, slipped into a fresh bread roll split open and filled in front of you. If the word is new to you, we explain it in our article on the sauter. Nothing sits in a bain-marie: the filling for each sauter is cooked in the wok when you order, so allow a few minutes.
Why 7am is the best hour
Between 7am and 10am the snack is at its quietest. The first customers are people starting work early around Grand Baie: building sites, shops, hotels. You order, you watch the bread being filled, you leave and eat it on the way. It is also the hour when there is still time to say hello properly. From 11:30 the wok never cools down until closing, and the queue moves at the pace of the cooking — a full morning behind the counter is described elsewhere in our journal.
Who it is for
For people who work early, obviously. But also for those staying in the north — Grand Baie, Pereybere, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches — who want to start the day like Mauritians rather than like the brochures: a vegetable roti at Rs 25 or a sausage sauter at Rs 75, standing up, before the beach. And for parents in the neighbourhood dropping off the kids and picking up something solid on the way.
House rules
Open Monday to Friday, 7am to 2pm; Saturday and Sunday we are closed. We do not deliver: you collect your order at the counter. To be sure not to wait, a message by phone or WhatsApp on +230 5987 8153 is enough, and your bread is waiting with your name on it. The rest of the board, from the chicken sauter at 90 Rs to the 250 Rs daily menu served at lunchtime, is in our introduction to the snack.
